Fatigue and Apathy in Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease.

On behalf of The Parkinson Alliance, I invite you to participate in our next research project. The Alliance is committed to helping improve the quality of life of people who have Parkinson’s disease (PD) and their carers.  We use self-report surveys as a tool for collecting information about people with PD and have found that this method can successfully measure many of the issues and topics important to the Parkinson’s community.

This survey is entitled “Fatigue and Apathy in Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease.” Fatigue and apathy are very common symptoms for individuals with PD. Studies suggest that over half of the individuals with PD may experience symptoms of fatigue and/or apathy. Additionally, there are many factors that may contribute to these symptoms, including sleep disturbance and depression.  Improving our understanding about the PD patient’s experience with these symptoms may help improve assessment of and treatment for such symptoms, ultimately improving the quality of life of the individual with PD.

I invite you to participate in our continuing research by completing this new survey. There are three sections to this survey, 1. General questions related to your experiences with fatigue and apathy.  2. Parkinson’s Disease Fatigue Scale, and 3. The Apathy Scale.  The information you provide will benefit patients and carers as well as treatment providers so that they can better help you. We encourage your participation, but want to emphasize that your participation is completely voluntary and that all information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential.

While completing the survey, please know that you do not need to complete the survey in one sitting. Please complete the survey at your pace (e.g., working on it in sections). You can simply press the “save” button at the bottom of the screen, and you can continue working on the survey the next time you log-in. If you would like to make additional, open-ended comments on the topic at issue, you could write out your responses or comments on the Forum, write them out and mail them to: The Parkinson Alliance, Post Office Box 308, Kingston, New Jersey, 08528-0308, or email them to info@dbs-stn.org.
